Summer Course: Integrating Sustainability Thinking into Academic Curricula”

Deadline: 16 February 2009
Environmental science, policy and management change rapidly. A researcher in the field of environment shall keep an open mind, be ready to absorb new knowledge and change the paradigms. Educators in the field face even more challenges, as getting new information framed into new concepts, and developing new skills is not enough for a successful student anymore. Communication and learning skills, ability to make judgment and to apply and understand knowledge are equally important for environmental professionals nowadays.
Distinguished lecturers, internationally renowned in their respective fields, will give sessions on emerging and cross-boundary fields of environmental science, policy and management. The course specifically targets PhD students and young researchers who are just about to develop their careers in the field, therefore the thematic sessions will be enhanced by talks and workshops on research methodology and development.

The course is built on three core objectives:
1. to facilitate transfer of knowledge on emerging policy/research areas and cross-cutting issues of environmental science;
2. to build capacity for adequate, efficient and oriented towards the international research community environmental research, based on multidisciplinary approaches and concepts, most recent findings and state-of-art and policy relevant research objectives;
3. to demonstrate what constitutes a good MSc program / PhD research proposals in environment, and how non-academic objectives integrated into a program syllabus contribute to academic excellence.
Following the objectives, the summer course will split into two sections:
  • thematic discussions on emerging policy/research areas and cross-cutting issues of environmental science.
  • discussion on "quality", "academic excellence" and general issues of research planning (with particular focus on PhD projects) and curriculum development for graduate environmental training.
