The United Nations University Institute for Environmental and Human Security (UNU-EHS) has cooperated with IHDP to co-publish the eleventh publication in their "Studies of the University: Research, Counsel, Education" series (SOURCE). This Source explores global health as a basic value for all human beings and societies and provides a conceptual framework to work towards policies for sustainable global health. Only healthy individuals can form a productive, prosperous society making health the most fundamental dimension of human security. Health affects all parts of societies; it plays a vital part in homes, at work places, in schools and in the public sphere.
This publication reflects upon some of the crucial thoughts and insights gained at the international conference “Towards Global Health” which took place in Bonn in May 2007. The conference was organized by several UN and Bonn-based entities.
Health is everyone’s responsibility; to achieve sustainability in global health the principles of basic hygiene have to be followed. The contributors of this publication examine the history of hygiene and health institutions and connect the issue of health to vulnerability, security and the environment. They also focus on the topic by considering urbanization and governance
