IHDP E-ZINE 1-2009

Dear Readers,
As the number of registrations to the 7th IHDP Open Meeting, “Social Challenges of Global Change”, from 26-30 April, 2009 continues to grow, so does our enthusiasm.
Exactly 1142 paper, session and poster proposals have been received by IHDP during the first and the second call. The Early Bird discount registration has also been a success, with around half of the expected delegates having already registered by early February. A two-week extension of the deadline has now been decided upon, allowing participants the opportunity to register at discounted rates until 15 February, 2009. This extension will also allow delegates to get important additional information about the 7th IHDP Open Meeting that will be made available within the next days. Prices as well as details on registration can be found at the Open Meeting Website.
The planning of the IHDP Open Meeting 2009 programme is in its very advanced stages. The parallel sessions from the first call have already been identified and published and the parallel sessions of the second call, along with the titles of the papers in each session, will be released by mid-February. Many keynote speakers and plenary participants, including high-ranking officials and prominent scientists in the field of global environmental change, have already confirmed their participation.
Four major social challenges
of critical importance in sustaining livelihoods have been identified in the context of the upcoming Open Meeting. These challenges, to which IHDP is committed, will each be the focus of one day of the meeting. Guidelines for full papers as well as statistical information about the participants of the IHDP Open Meeting 2009 can now be found on the IHDP Open Meeting 2009 website www.openmeeting2009.org. A call for Open Meeting volunteers, who will play a very important role during the conference, has also been opened with the possibility to register through the Internet.
In addition to the IHDP Open Meeting preparations, the IHDP Secretariat has established a strategy to enhance its communication with its National Committees, Global Change Committees and National Contact Points. As a result, we have received updates about their events, publications and research activities, all of which reflect the dynamism and productivity of our global network. We are pleased to present IHDP's first E-Zine of 2009.

IHDP Open Meeting 2009 Parallel Sessions have been released
The planning of the Open Meeting 2009 programme is rapidly progressing. Parallel sessions from the first call have already been identified and published, while the parallel sessions of the second call will be released within the next days along with the names of papers in each session. Side events and meetings, book and project launches, a substantial exhibition area as well as specialised formats addressing the science-policy interaction will all complement the scientific core of the conference. To see the conference’s programme, four major themes and a list of Frequently Asked Questions, please visit www.openmeeting2009.org/FAQ.html
GECHH Inaugural SSC Meeting in Merida
The inaugural Scientific Steering Committee Meeting of the ESSP Joint Project on Global Environmental Change and Human Health convened in Merida, Mexico, 5 – 6 December, 2008 in conjunction with the EcoHealth Forum (www.ecohealth2008.org). The meeting was Co-Chaired by Professors Ulisses Confalonieri and Mark Rosenberg. The Mexican Government provided the ESSP with funds for the SSC meeting. The Sponsor Programmes, IGBP, IHDP and WCRP, all provided their continued support to the project. Key outcomes of the SSC meeting included the identification of ‘fast track’ activities that would get the Project on the map and produce tangible results and outputs in a short time. Proposed fast track activities include policy briefs, training courses, research collaboration with existing projects and research groups as well as papers at major conferences and in peer reviewed journals. Discussions also focused on the urgent need to identify a location and secure funding for the International Project Office (IPO), its staff and their activities. Communications tools were also discussed at length, including the creation of a project website and brochure, thanks to IHDP. For more information about GECHH, visit http://www.ihdp.unu.edu/category/21?menu=49.

New Msc in Global Environmental Governance
A brand-new degree programme, the one-year master of science in Political Science (Global Environmental Governance), has been just launched at the VU University Amsterdam. While the programme has a wider focus covering several areas of global environmental change, one of its main empirical areas of study will be climate governance. Students will finalise their studies with an MSc thesis, which may focus on climate governance and be written in conjunction with the many large-scale international research projects already underway at the Institute for Environmental Studies of the VU University Amsterdam. The Institute's department on Environmental Policy Analysis was evaluated in 2007 as the top research department in the Netherlands in its field; students in this new MSc programme can also rely on the department's extensive international networks, such as the Europe-wide Global Governance Project (glogov.org) and the worldwide Earth System Governance Project (earthsystemgovernance.org). The deadline for non-European applications is 1 March 2009, and that for European students is 1 April. The programme is taught in English. More information is available online.
