This issue of IHDP UPDATE magazine introduces the set-up, the programme and the overarching goals for the 7th International Science Conference on the Human Dimensions of Global Environmental Change, also known as the IHDP Open Meeting 2009.

The 7th Open Meeting focuses on “Social Challenges of Global Change”. In an era of unprecedented, rapid and large-scale environmental, economic and demographic changes, the International Scientific Planning Committee for the Open Meeting wisely decided to envisage the set of threats, challenges and opportunities that these changes pose to human society at various levels.

The magazine includes welcome messages from IHDP, reflections from two global research networks sponsoring the conference, APN and IAI, a preview of four of the best graded papers submitted by participants, articles from two IHDP core projects arriving at their synthesis processes (Industrial Transformations and Global Environmental Change and Human Security) and an article from IHDP’s newest core project, the Earth System Governance project, to be launched during the conference.
