UN Secretary-General to Convene Climate Change Summit
United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will convene the Summit on Climate Change—the largest summit of world leaders to address climate change–on
Tuesday, 22 September 2009 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. The Heads of State and Government of more than 90 member states will participate in the one-day event, and all 192 UN member states will be represented. The objective of the “Summit on Climate Change” is to mobilize the political will and generate the momentum needed to reach an ambitious agreement at the UN Climate Conference in Copenhagen in December – one that reflects what science says is absolutely necessary.
As an integral part of the Secretary-General’s Summit on Climate Change, this luncheon will bring together representatives of governments, business, civil society and the United Nations. World leaders will participate in four to discuss parallel roundtables to discuss possible actions, how to build positive momentum for climate negotiations and the role of business and industry in addressing solutions to climate change.
The Summit aims to advance the negotiations, but is not a negotiating session itself. It provides a forum where leaders can discuss fundamental issues, find common ground and provide guidance to their negotiators. The main outcome of the Summit will be captured in a Chair’s Summary.
