Main activities :
organization of workshops and conferences, participation in sessions of communication on global change, annual organization of an International Summer School and inventorying and correlating global environmental change research-work carried out by various institutions.
1. Organization of and participation in scientific events:
*Symposium on The Quality of the Environmental and Landuse
The 6th edition of this Symposium (May 26-27, 2007) was organized by the Faculty of History and Geography – Geography Department, in collaboration with the Institute of Geography of the Romanian Academy, the Suceava Forestry Direction, the Suceava Environmental Protection Agency, and Suceava Environment Guard. A number of 89 scientific papers were presented within three sections : Quality of the Environment, Applied Regional Geography, Geography Teaching and Ecological Education. The opening session was addressed by the Rector of the ”Ştefan cel Mare” University in Suceava, professors from the University of Suceava and several representatives of the local administration. Symposium proceedings ended in a workshop on State-of-the-art in the Quality of Geographical Environment in Bucovina
*Conference on Climate Change in Romania, the Chamber of Deputies
With a view to raising awareness on the necessity to adopt measures and reduce the impact of climate change in Romania, a Conference with international participation was held at the Parliament Palace on February 21, 2008. Proceedings were attended by representatives of the Chamber of Deputies, the International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River, the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, the National Administration of Meteorology, the National Institute of Hydrology and Water Management, the “Romanian Waters” National Agency, Hydroelectrica Company, the Romanian Academy’s Institute of Geography, the Institute for Soils and Agrochemistry Research, and the Forests National Company.
The topics broached targeted aspects of climate change in Romania, the socio-economic impact of climate change, the role of the Romanian Parliament in promoting legislative initiatives in matters of climate change, coordination of activities to limit the impact of climate change in the Danube drainage basin, and steps to adjust to climate change and deplete green-house emissions.
*The Seventh National Conference on Global Environmental Change, the Romanian Academy
The Seventh National Conference on “Global Environmental Change”, held on March 22, 2008 was organized by the Romanian Academy, the National Committee for Global Environmental Change and the Academy of Economic Studies – Faculty of International Economic Relations.
In line with the theme of the Conference: The Impact of Global Climate Change on Society and Environment in Romania, discussions focused on significant global change research into extreme natural phenomena, such as: floods, droughts and desertification; the effects of climate change on agriculture and forestry; the population’s health status in the light of extreme climatic phenomena.
Conference proceedings developed within three sections: Climate Change – Economic and Geopolitical Aspects; Extreme Phenomena and Climate Change; Interdisciplinary Research into Environmental Change. In the opening session, problems connected with the impact of climate change on Romania’s environment and society were addressed by representatives of the Romanian Academy, the Academy of Economic Studies and the National Administration of Meteorology. Members from 14 prestigious R&D and higher learning institutions participated in the three sections with 30 papers on a wide-range of topics related to global environmental change.
2. International Summer School on Environmental Hazards and Sustainable Development in Mountain Regions
organized by the Institute of Geography (Venue : Geographical Research Station, Pătârlagele, Buzău County).
The Institute of Geography in collaboration with the National Committee for Global Environmental Change and the Romanian Association of Geomorphology organizes annually an International Summer School on ‘Natural Hazards and Sustainable Development in Mountain Regions’.
The event is addressed to young researchers, MSc and PhD students from Romania and the European countries whose interests focus on the relations between geomorphological processes and the environment.
Initiated in 2001, the International Summer School has reached its 7th edition, thus becoming a well-known programme in Romania and in some profile institutes and universities of Central and Eastern Europe.
Until now, this event was attended by 82 young researchers from institutes and universities of Hungary, Poland, Bulgaria, Turkey, Sweden, Israel, Belgium, Great Britain, Italy, Austria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Romania.
Main topics: flash floods, mudflows, landslides, erosion, fluviatile relief, seismic activity
