The Integrated Risk Governance Project (IRG-Project), one of IHDP’s latest core projects, has been launched! The first meeting of the IRG-Project's Scientific Steering Committee (SSC) in China in August 2011 aimed at clarifying activitiesfor the upcoming year, finalizing details regarding SSC memberships and discussing the science of disaster risk management. Recently, the global risk community has realised that a new set of risk issues will become increasingly relevant in the future: issues of Integrated Risk Management and Governance. One objective is to learn how to deal with risks that exceed current coping capacities. As a consequence, the Chinese National Committee for IHDP (CNC-IHDP), supported by the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People’s Republic of China, has proposed to IHDP the development of a new core science project on Integrated Risk Governance. To lead this initiative on IRG, an international scientific planning committee (SPC-IRG) has been established, which was now replaced by the Scientific Steering Committee (SSC). The project is chaired by Professor Shi Peijun from Beijing Normal University (BNU) and Professor Carlo Jaeger from the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) and the European Climate Forum (ECF).Risk occurrences as events in the dynamics of socio-ecological systems will be studied. There will be a focus on the entry transitions by which a given socio-ecological system switches into emergencyor crisis mode, e.g. in dealing with a hurricaneor a financial collapse, and the exit transitionsby which the system switches back from emergency or crisis mode to a normal mode. A Science Plan for the project can be downloaded. IRG-Project is always happy to get involved with interesting researchers in the field of integratedrisk governance research.
