17-21 October 2011 Nanjing, China Application Deadline: 31 July 2011 Contact: Barbara Solich One of the major challenges of societies concerns how to improve well-being in an inclusive way, while respecting planetary boundaries. The upcoming Rio+20 Earth Summit 2012 (United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development—UNCSD) has as one of its major themes ‘Green Economy within the Context of Sustainable Development and Poverty Reduction’. The so-called ‘Green Economy’ offers various insights and policy measures for transforming socio-economic systems toward a sustainable path. In this realm, it is important to have a comprehensive understanding of the concept of Green Economy, covering not only important aspects related to economic efficiency and economic policy reforms (taxes, economic incentives, investment in green technologies, etc), but also to take into consideration a more holistic view of such transformation by considering social components including equity, inclusiveness, and the compatibility of these changes with social, cultural and political values. In this context, the Asia-Pacific Network for Global Change Research (APN) and the International Human Dimension Programme on Global Environmental Change (IHDP) are organizing a workshop on Green Economy with the purpose of supporting capacity building in developing countries from the Asian-Pacific region. The workshop is oriented toward early-career scientists and policy-makers, providing them with an integrated framework on Green Economy that considers social, political, economic and technological changes necessary for a transition toward socially and environmentally sustainable development. The workshop will also focus on the long run feasibility of present high economic growth rates in some Asian economies, identifying alternative development pathways for a transition toward a Green Economy. |
