On March 8, United Nations Convention on Sustainable Development (UNCSD) negotiations to plan the Rio+20 Earth Summit (June 2012) will be flanked by a high-level Side Event titled “Planetary Boundaries & the Urgent Need for Societal Transformations”, leading up to the Open Science Conference Planet under Pressure (March 2012).

What relevant research findings can global change scientists present to the Rio+20 Earth Summit? What scientific evidence from both the natural and social sciences is needed to tackle sustainable development issues, climate negotiations, and other efforts to ensure a sustainable future for humanity? In what way can scientists and policy-makers work together more closely?

These key questions will be discussed by scientists in three presentations focusing on the planetary and societal risks currently facing us.

Presentations:

Societal transformations toward a green economy by Dr. Deborah Rogers

Planetary and societal risks: Why we need planetary stewardship by Prof. Sybil Seitzinger

Science and policy towards sustainable development by Dr. Gisbert Glaser
